As of 12:00 PM on October 8th, according to information on the internet, there are 26 locations in the Tokyo metropolitan area with water leaks due to damaged water pipes, and damage to the Yoro River water pipe bridge in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture. There have been no reports of water outages from this earthquake, but if an even stronger earthquake were to strike, the area of damage could become more widespread, and water outages could occur.
The recent collapse of an aqueduct in Wakayama City highlighted the aging of the aqueduct itself, and reports indicate that there are approximately 5,000 similar aqueducts nationwide. While maintenance and replacement of the aqueducts themselves are necessary, it is equally important to establish systems to ensure continued water supply even in the event of damage.
